Compassionate in Caring Applied! :) 201110

On the 20th of Nov 2010, BUCG together with several other cell groups had the privilege of visiting Breakthrough Drug Rehabilitation Centre. For many of us, it was our first time there. As such, we did not know what to expect and had mixed feelings of excitement and fear. We looked forward to meeting new people and helping out with spring-cleaning. However, when someone first mentions a drug addict or somebody in rehabilitation, the first image that comes to mind would be a silhouette resembling a skeletal figure with dark rings around their eyes and a sunken, depressed look. Adding on to that stereotypical view was our fear of awkward silences.

Arriving at BDRC changed our perspectives altogether. It was not what we expected it to be. Perhaps it was the place itself – how it was so well maintained and bright in appearance – but we believe it was more to do with the people there. The brothers we met there were so different from the impression we previously had. There was initially a share of hesitance in us to approach them but it all practically disappeared as they introduced themselves – smiles all round and a little nudging here and there. It soon dawned on us that they were just like us, people. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the brothers were the ones that initiated personal introductions and small talk. Hearing a few of them share their life stories and testimonies made it pretty evident how reliant on God they were and just how serious they were about recovering. No shame, no looking back.

We did not feel time pass as it was a really enjoyable experience. We wish we could have listened more. That morning we were all daunted by the fact that we had no plans for the day. Just as well it turned out – we did not need any. All we really needed was to know the time and place. God took it from there. He opened our eyes and helped us look to the needs of others around us.

We really thank God for doing something in the lives of these brothers and ours too! BDRC is truly a ministry of love and hope. Pastor Sam and his team must be applauded for their tireless efforts in making a difference and bringing hope to the lives of these brothers. We would love to have similar activities like this or perhaps a second visit to BDRC. :)
